should be electrocuted just like livestock. the announcement from karl rove's money machine a few days ago that they would try to stop candidates like steve king and paul broun from continuing to cost the republican party seats in the u.s. senate. the reaction to that announcement on the right was immediately and uniformly and vociferously hostile. how dare karl rove and his money guys try to do any such thing. and so yes, paul broun and steve king may be the prototypical examples of the kind of off the cooke end candidates that karl rove and the big money guys do not want in republican politics, because those are the kind of guys that lose senate seats that are otherwise winnable. but karl rove and his money guys kind of stand alone in that assessment. the rest of the party wants that. they want those guys. and they want it not naively. they know what they are getting. steve king and paul broun have been around for a long time. when the party stands up and says these are the guys they want, they know who they're talking about. they know who these guys are. and it is what they choose.

as the washington republican elite, folks like karl rove, efforts like what we see spelled out in "the new york times" today, to control them, to corral them to, steal them away from candidates they may like, towards candidates who they think the establishment deems to be more elective. i've heard some republicans talking about the potential backlash it to, where there would be nothing that would fire up tea party activists on the base more than thinking that karl rove is trying to big foot them in telling them who to elect in primaries and that may have the opposite effect of riling up strong sentiment on the conservative base and encouraging tea party candidates, potentially encouraging conservative donors to put in money to oppose what karl rove is trying to do. >> the fringiness. the fringies being upset by the establishment. really quick here, lori montgomery. boston globe reporting there might be a romney that gets in this senate race. do you think that's realistic or silliness? >> you know, i can't imagine that the romneys -- >> your tone says it all. >> are up for another one of these.

election cycle. karl rove's american crossroads had a 1.29% return on investment, spending $104 million. compare it to the house majority pac's 70% success rate on $30 million. another democratic super pac, majority pac is what it was called, had an even higher success rate. democratic super pacs did better in the last election because basically, they had a better message, with policies people actually cared about. it seems to me the republican super pacs were all based on a power grab. they had more money. but the money is meant to protect those at the very top. the wealthy. it's power versus populism. and this time around i think we did pretty well. i guess we could say that the citizens united beat citizens united based on where people were. but president obama's remarks three years ago are so true to this day. >> last week the supreme court reversed a century of law that i believe will open the floodgates for special interests, including foreign corporations, to spend without limit in our elections. >> to spend without limit in our elections. let's bring in msnbc political analyst a
